About CBSE Training:

Core, Balance & Flexibility

Core, balance and flexibility are the foundational pieces that allow the body to perform movement. Neuromotor difficulties and low muscle tone seen in the special needs population contributes to poor core activation, balance, and flexibility. This can lead to postural problems, falls, injuries, and other muscular imbalances.

In this part of the CBSE Model, we focus on teaching functional movements that improve core strength and increase balance along with passive and static stretching to improve flexibility.

Brain & Sensory System

In this part of the CBSE Model, we focus on teaching exercises that provide an environment for new neurological pathways to be made. Through repetitive movement which creates muscle memory across the body’s transverse line and midline, left/right brain connections as well as bottom/top brain connections can be made.

These connections aid in multi-tasking, decreasing melt-downs, improving social skills, reducing anxiety, and reducing heightened sensory sensitivities and in turn increasing independence. Many clients who have used our program have been able to obtain jobs due to their improved independence.

Strength & Muscle Development

Anaerobic exercise, such as resistance training, involves a short burst of intense movement.  In our CBSE model, we teach how to adapt traditional resistance training exercises to promote muscle development, which helps lower body fat percentage and increase muscle tone in the special needs population.

Endurance & Stamina Adaptation

Aerobic exercise, such as steady-state cardio, involves using oxygen for extended periods of time.  When the body starts to undergo this kind of activity, the heart becomes more efficient and the body learns to adapt to increases in cortisol. As a result of this type of aerobic activity, more calories are expended and tools such as self-regulation become more effective from the body learning to adapt to stress.

About Nutrition Training:

special needs nutrition certification
Nutrition Through the Lifestyle

Nutrition for Special Needs individuals may be similar to infants, children and adults without disabilities in many cases, but developmental differences may affect how those nutritional needs are met. Introducing solids to infants, offering texture appropriate foods to toddlers and promoting healthy eating with more independence in adolescence will all be discussed.

Basics of Healthy Eating

A review of general healthy eating guidelines for non-nutrition professionals. With so much information readily available in the media it can sometimes be difficult to distinguish between myths and truth. This section will cover general healthy eating guidelines, which is appropriate for most Americans.

Special Needs Diagnoses and Conditions

Individuals with Special Needs have a wide variety of differences and therefore nutritional needs will differ as well. Certain conditions may be associated with increased metabolic demand and individuals need more nutrition to maintain a healthy weight, while other conditions may make individuals more likely to being overweight throughout their lifetime. Behavioral components of certain conditions may also cause individuals to be more sensitive to textures, colors, and smells which can limit food variability. This section will review a variety of special needs diagnoses and conditions and the nutritional challenges they may face.

Therapeutic Diets

This section will discuss therapeutic diet options for certain conditions and therapy techniques to improve nutritional outcomes.  This section will include nutritional management of sensory processing disorders, weight management, picky eating, dysphagia and enteral nutrition.

Skills You'll Learn:

Manage Meltdowns

With many different types of special needs, people are stuck in a “flight or flight” response due to their condition.  Triggers such as sound, lighting, or even trying something new can set someone off into a meltdown. In our course, we teach you how to navigate those meltdowns and use exercise as a tool to prevent future occurrences of meltdowns.

Simplify Exercises

When you think about the step by step process of how a child learns to walk, it’s incredibly simple. We take that process and apply it to exercise through what are called regressions and progressions.  We teach you how to break down complex movements, such as the squat, and progress it step by step to achieve mastery of the movement.

Counseling Techniques

Learning to obtain a dietary recall, motivational interviewing for behavior change, and redirecting the special needs individual’s attention. Special needs individuals may be highly functional and able to independently participate in nutrition counseling, while other individuals need a parent or guardian present to help facilitate the counseling session. In our course, we teach you how to navigate all of these situations.

Diet to Meal Translation

Nutrition recommendations can sometimes be difficult to translate to a plate. Additionally if a special needs individual has nutrition goals that differ from their family it can make meal planning difficult. This course will show you how to navigate taking nutrition recommendations and creating a meal for both the special needs individual and their family.

Yes. Since the personal training industry is not governed by a state board, there are no no specific requirements to practice. We do recommend that you consider a nationally accredited training program to supplement your Special Strong certification, but this is not a requirement to train clients.

Of course! Many employers have continuing education slated into their budget.   For this reason, we’ve created a helpful template that you can customize and email to your employer.  You can download the word dcoument here

You can also use our certification in home or at select facilities that approve our specialty certification. Since we are nationally accredited through several organizations, many independently owned facilities accept our certification.

You can call yourself a Special Strong trainer. You may list your Special Strong qualifications on a business card, resume, or website About/Qualifications page. Nothing more.

You cannot use the Special Strong name in any other business or promotional way unless you franchise with us. If you violate this, it is considered intellectual property theft and you are subject to fines and legal fees.
